This very large dog, possibly a great dane, came up to about my chest on all fours, and most likely out-weighed me. While I was taking in the views from the tower at the missile site, an unleashed dog ran up to me while growling, and jumped on my back while attempting to bite me. From the website, I get the impression that only dogs on leash are allowed in this mountain range, but it seems that people frequently allow their dogs off leash in the area I was at. Today I hiked to the Nike Missile Site in the Santa Monica Mountains. Although many of our canine friends are perfectly well behaved on or off leash, others can be aggressive, and dog owners do not always keep a close eye on their pets, or keep their pets by their sides. However, people often forget that dogs can also be dangerous. I frequently see posts here with people worried about the possibility of running into mountain lions, bears, or even bobcats.
